In late 2024, Ramika was invited to participate in a Request for Quotation (RFQ) for the complete overhaul of the lighting system at Sibanye Stillwater’s Western Platinum Refinery, located in Vulcania, Brakpan. The project aimed to modernize the facility’s lighting infrastructure to align with the latest LED technology while meeting strict occupational health and safety standards, achieving ESG (Energy Savings Goals), and ensuring long-term sustainability.
To develop the most effective solution, Ramika conducted an extensive site walkabout and analysis, which included:
Ramika proposed a comprehensive turnkey lighting solution, encompassing supply, delivery, and installation of retrofit LED lighting across the entire plant. The approach focused on maximizing efficiency while reducing costs through strategic retrofits and upgrades.
Approximately 40% of existing linear luminaires were upgraded using state-of-the-art LED strip gear trays, eliminating the need for full housing replacements and significantly reducing project costs.
Outdated 400W floodlights consuming around 450W per fitting were replaced with high-lumen output 145W LED floodlights, achieving nearly 70% energy savings while exceeding lighting requirements.
70W bulkhead fittings were replaced with 40W LED Nordland bulkheads, improving efficiency and supporting the facility’s emergency backup system.
Several high masts illuminating key areas of the refinery were fitted with dual-module 290W LED floodlights, reducing energy costs by over 50% while significantly enhancing visibility.
New lighting installations for walkways utilized a combination of single and double-module floodlights to ensure adequate illumination
Hazardous area zones were retrofitted with latest-generation LED EX linear fittings, ensuring compliance with stringent safety standards.
A combination of streetlights and floodlights was deployed to reinforce security measures around the refinery’s perimeter.
Panel lights and linear fittings in offices were retrofitted, utilizing the same LED gear tray upgrades applied in the plant—drastically reducing costs and minimizing installation timeframes.
Panel lights were the only outsourced luminaires used to complement this all-encompassing lighting solution.
